Twitter Introduces New Features to Address Spam DMs and Offer Revenue to Creators

In response to increasing competition from Meta’s Threads platform, Twitter has announced two new features aimed at addressing user concerns and incentivizing users to continue using its platform instead of migrating to rival services.

One of the new features is designed to combat the issue of spam messages in Direct Messages (DMs). Twitter Support announced that the company is rolling out new settings to mitigate the problem of spam in DMs. With the new settings enabled, messages from verified users whom you don’t follow will be directed to your message request inbox. Users who previously allowed message requests from everyone will be automatically migrated to this new setting, although they have the option to switch back at any time. Essentially, this means that users will only receive DMs in their inboxes from people they follow or with whom they have previously interacted via DMs.

In addition to tackling spam, Twitter also unveiled its Creator Ads Revenue Sharing program. As part of this program, the platform will share a portion of advertising revenue with select content creators. Content creators who meet specific eligibility criteria, such as being verified users with at least five million impressions on their posts in each of the last three months and having a Stripe payment account, will be eligible to participate. This means that content creators will receive a portion of the revenue generated from ads displayed in their replies.

These new features follow an earlier feature introduced by Twitter, which allows users to offer paid subscriptions to their content on the platform. By expanding its monetization options for creators, Twitter aims to attract and retain top talent, providing them with an opportunity to generate revenue from their content.

With the introduction of these features, Twitter aims to address user concerns and provide added incentives for content creators to remain active on its platform. By improving the DM experience and offering revenue-sharing opportunities, Twitter hopes to maintain user engagement and discourage users from migrating to competing platforms.
