The Dark Art of Design: iFixit’s Exploration of the M3 MacBook Pro’s Space Black Finish

Technology repair experts iFixit have once again delved into Apple’s latest innovation, sharing an insightful video teardown of the new 14-inch MacBook Pro featuring both the M3 and M3 Pro chips. In this exploration, iFixit offers a close-up look at the internal architecture of the laptops, revealing that the design remains largely unchanged from the previous MacBook Pro models.

The highlight of iFixit’s revelation is not just the intricate internals but also the explanation behind Apple’s new and mesmerizing Space Black finish on the MacBook Pro. In a detailed blog post, iFixit’s Kevin O’Reilly sheds light on the methodology Apple employed to achieve this darker hue.

In essence, Apple’s approach involved making the anodized surface of the Space Black finish “more uneven” at a microscopic level. O’Reilly explains, “Apple found they could etch the already rough anodized surface, making it more uneven. The resulting nooks and crannies further diffuse incoming light rays, sending them off in even more directions. Less white light makes its way to our eyeballs—resulting in that slick matte finish.”

This innovative technique not only adds a unique aesthetic dimension to the MacBook Pro but also plays with the physics of light, creating a darker appearance by manipulating the way light interacts with the surface.

As Apple continues to push the boundaries of design and functionality, iFixit’s teardowns provide tech enthusiasts with an exclusive peek into the intricate details that make these devices stand out. The M3 MacBook Pro, with its Space Black finish, is not just a powerful computing tool but also a testament to the artistry and precision that goes into Apple’s product development.
