Staying Connected on the Rails: Orange Polska’s Innovation for PKP Intercity Trains

Orange Polska has significantly boosted onboard connectivity by deploying mobile signal repeaters in collaboration with other mobile network operators in Poland. These repeaters are transforming the train travel experience, making it possible for passengers to comfortably use the internet and make voice calls on the go.

Amplifying Connectivity on PKP Intercity Trains

In an impressive technological feat, Orange Polska, in partnership with leading mobile network operators including P4 (Play brand), Polkomtel (Plus brand), and T-Mobile Poland, has installed mobile signal repeaters in 300 PKP Intercity train cars. This collaboration aims to provide passengers with robust cellular signal strength during their journeys, enabling them to stay connected and enjoy uninterrupted mobile services.

Elevating the Train Travel Experience

Orange Polska recognizes the value of train travel, offering passengers a golden opportunity to watch movies, work, or simply stay connected during their journeys. However, the effectiveness of these activities largely depends on mobile network coverage. To address this challenge, Orange has proactively installed amplifiers inside train cars, transforming the way passengers experience train connectivity.

Understanding Signal Amplifiers

Cellular network signal amplifiers, often referred to as repeaters, serve as the key to this enhanced train connectivity. These devices play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between base stations and passengers’ mobile devices, significantly improving the quality and reach of the mobile network.

The Technology Behind Signal Amplifiers

In the context of trains, a sophisticated setup is put into place. Donor antennas, specifically designed for train roofs, capture signals from base stations. These signals are then relayed via coaxial cables to repeaters, where they undergo amplification. Subsequently, the fortified signals are distributed through leaky coaxial cables that run along the length of train cars, ensuring a consistent radio signal across the entire train.

Driving the Future of Train Connectivity

As of October, Orange has successfully deployed amplifiers in 300 train cars, with an additional 254 train cars set to be equipped by year-end. Notably, these amplifiers are equipped with GPS receivers, enabling remote monitoring and dynamic configuration based on train location. This technological advancement facilitates real-time insights into passenger demand and train traffic.

Balancing Connectivity and Offline Options

While the introduction of signal amplifiers is a milestone for train travel, Orange Polska acknowledges that occasional signal loss may still occur. In such instances, passengers are encouraged to make use of alternatives such as pre-downloaded media for offline enjoyment or indulging in a good book—a timeless and reliable companion for train journeys.
