Securing Your Privacy: How to Turn Off NameDrop on iPhone and Apple Watch

In the latest iOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1 updates, Apple introduced a new feature called NameDrop, allowing users to effortlessly share contact information by holding their iPhones and Apple Watches together. While the convenience is undeniable, the potential privacy risks may lead you to seek ways to disable NameDrop.

NameDrop facilitates the swift exchange of contact details with nearby devices, but the ease of sharing also raises concerns about unauthorized access to your information. If privacy is a priority or if you’re a parent aiming to enhance your child’s iPhone safety, you might want to disable NameDrop.

To disable NameDrop, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Navigate to General > Airdrop.
  3. Choose the Airdrop access option that suits your preferences: disable it entirely, allow access for 10 minutes to everyone, or limit access to contacts only.

While sharing contacts via Airdrop, especially with work-related contacts not saved in your phone, it’s advisable to choose the “Contacts Only” option for added security.

To specifically disable NameDrop, locate the “Start Sharing By” section within the Airdrop settings. Look for the “Bringing Devices Together” option, and toggle it off. You can easily re-enable it when needed, ensuring that sharing becomes more deliberate.

Even with NameDrop turned off, you can still use Airdrop to share contact cards. It’s important to note that NameDrop exclusively works with new contacts and cannot be utilized to update existing ones.

By taking these steps, you can enjoy the benefits of Airdrop while maintaining control over the privacy of your contact information.
