Scala Data Centers Launches Hyperscale Data Center in Mexico

Latin American data center operator, Scala Data Centers, has made a significant entry into the Mexican market with the unveiling of its first data center project, SMEXTP01, in Tepotzotlan. The facility, with an initial investment of around USD 80 million, is set to address the growing demand from large cloud and content providers in the region.

The HyperEdge data center, SMEXTP01, is poised to have a critical capacity of 7.9 MW, with an initial availability of 5 MW. Located in Tepotzotlan, around 25 miles from Mexico City, the facility is strategically positioned to cater to Hyperscale providers and meet the evolving data center needs in the Latin American market.

Scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2023, SMEXTP01 has already secured a significant Hyperscale client. The facility spans approximately 142,133 square feet and underscores Scala’s focus on customization, modularity, and environmental sustainability.

In line with its commitment to green practices, Scala Data Centers emphasizes that the data center will be powered entirely by renewable and certified energy sources.

Strategic Move in a Thriving Market

Mexico stands as the second-largest data center and cloud market in Latin America, with impressive annual growth rates of approximately 22 percent and 25 percent, respectively. Its robust connectivity infrastructure, including 11 submarine cables connecting it to the United States and the rest of the Americas, solidifies Mexico’s position as a key player in the region. Notably, Mexico, along with Chile, boasts a direct submarine cable connection to the Asian market.

The choice of Tepotzotlan as the location for the data center offers a strategic advantage. The city combines essential factors such as energy availability, connectivity, and proximity to a substantial consumer market, making it an ideal hub for critical IT infrastructure, particularly in the Hyperscale domain.

Expanding Footprint in Latin America

Scala Data Centers is actively pursuing expansion plans across Latin America. With ongoing projects in Brazil (Tambore Campus in Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre), Chile (Lampa), and upcoming ventures in Fortaleza (Brazil), Mexico, and Colombia, the company is poised for further growth.

Since its inception in 2020, Scala Data Centers has invested over USD 1.6 billion in projects across Latin America. The company is determined to achieve a distributed capacity of 500 MW within the next five years across the four countries in which it operates.

In 2023 alone, Scala Data Centers has commenced operations in three cutting-edge data centers across Latin America, contributing to over 20 MW of IT capacity. These facilities are located in Rio de Janeiro, Tambore (Brazil), and Curauma (Chile).

As Scala Data Centers continues to expand its presence and offerings, its foray into the Mexican market marks a significant step in catering to the increasing data center demands of the region.
