Orange Romania Signs Renewable Energy vPPA With Engie Romania

Orange Romania Group has taken a significant step towards achieving its carbon neutrality and sustainability goals by partnering with ENGIE Romania to sign the first-ever virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) contract for long-term renewable energy. This strategic move underscores Orange Romania’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable energy practices.

vPPA Contract and Renewable Energy

The vPPA contract, spanning six years, solidifies the collaboration between Orange Romania Group and ENGIE Romania. Under this agreement, Orange Romania commits to virtually purchasing 30 GWh of annual electricity needs from solar technology. This not only contributes to the organization’s renewable energy consumption but also demonstrates its dedication to supporting green initiatives.

Sustainability Initiatives

Orange Romania is not stopping at the vPPA contract. The company has implemented additional measures to align with its sustainability objectives. These measures encompass cost-efficiency strategies and ensuring that a certain percentage of energy is sourced from renewable sources. By embracing these practices, Orange Romania aims to optimize its energy consumption while minimizing its environmental impact.

Carbon Neutrality Goals

The vPPA contract serves as a vital component of a broader mission – to help Orange companies in Romania achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. This ambitious goal is in line with the overarching strategy of the Orange Group. By securing renewable energy through the vPPA contract, Orange Romania is taking proactive steps towards fulfilling this commitment.

European Green Energy

Orange’s commitment to green energy extends beyond Romania. In 2023, the company successfully incorporated a substantial volume of 80 percent green energy in various European countries, including Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, and Moldova. With the vPPA contract in Romania, the country joins the ranks of those embracing sustainable energy practices.

Orange Romania expressed its dedication to sustainability, stating, “Decarbonisation and the use of more renewable and sustainable energy sources is a priority for us, along with using resources efficiently through reuse and recycling.” The company sees the vPPA contract as a crucial step towards contributing to the sustainable development of society.

ENGIE Romania’s Perspective

ENGIE Romania, the partner in this endeavor, highlighted the predictability of energy costs and the environmental benefits associated with this partnership. The vPPA concept offers advantages by reducing trading risks related to energy market price fluctuations while ensuring a renewable energy source.

Orange’s Green Energy Initiatives

Orange Romania has been proactively implementing green energy initiatives, including the installation of solar panels on network sites and interconnection centers, energy consumption reduction, and equipment upgrades for greater energy efficiency. The organization launched a solar panel installation program in 2022, which has already yielded tangible results in terms of operational solar panels on network sites and interconnection centers.

Orange Romania’s vPPA agreement with ENGIE Romania marks a significant stride towards sustainable practices and carbon neutrality. By virtually purchasing renewable energy and embracing green initiatives, Orange Romania not only sets an example for responsible corporate behavior but also contributes to the global push for a greener future.
