LetMeSpy, a spyware service based in Poland, has announced its permanent shutdown after a data breach in June resulted in the loss of its server data. The breach, orchestrated by a hacker, not only compromised LetMeSpy’s servers but also wiped out a significant amount of data stolen from thousands of victims’ phones. The spyware service, known for its Android phone monitoring app, has since confirmed its closure and has taken measures to prevent further usage. Spyware’s Modus Operandi
LetMeSpy was an Android phone monitoring app designed to remain hidden on a victim’s phone, making it difficult to detect or remove. Once installed, the spyware surreptitiously harvested messages, call logs, and real-time location data from the compromised device. Often, the spyware was planted by individuals with knowledge of the victim’s phone passcode, allowing unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Scope of Breach and Data Loss
A copy of LetMeSpy’s database obtained by DDoSecrets, a nonprofit transparency collective, revealed that the spyware had been used to steal data from over 13,000 compromised Android devices globally. Despite the breach, LetMeSpy’s website had previously claimed control over more than 236,000 devices. The database also revealed that the spyware was developed by Radeal, a Krakow-based tech company, whose CEO, Rafal Lidwin, did not provide a comment on the situation.
