KDDI Philippines Spearheads Telecom Infrastructure for Historic Manila Subway Project

In a significant stride towards enhancing metropolitan connectivity, KDDI Philippines, a subsidiary of the renowned KDDI corporation, has embarked on a transformative project, contributing to the development of the first subway in the Philippines. The initiative involves the construction of essential telecommunication infrastructure and a cutting-edge fare collection system for the Manila Metropolitan Subway, connecting Valenzuela to Paranaque in the metropolitan Manila area.

Project Partnership with Thales: On December 6, 2023, KDDI Philippines formalized its participation in the historic project by signing a contract with Thales, a leading French company specializing in transportation systems. The project encompasses a span of approximately 30 km, encompassing fifteen stations, the depot, and the operation control center, facilitating seamless connectivity across the metropolitan expanse.

Telecom Expertise in Action: Leveraging KDDI’s extensive experience in the development of telecommunication infrastructure on both domestic and international fronts, KDDI Philippines is set to collaborate with partner entities to execute the construction of the subway’s telecommunication system. The project scope includes the delivery and installation of piping components, cabling work, and the installation of essential equipment to ensure robust and efficient connectivity.

Fare Collection System Integration: Alongside telecommunication infrastructure, KDDI Philippines will actively contribute to the implementation of a sophisticated fare collection system. This includes the installation of state-of-the-art ticket gates and ticket vending machines, coupled with the delivery and installation of communication equipment, servers, and other essential components to streamline the fare collection process.

Anticipated Project Completion: With an expected completion timeline set for the fiscal year 2029, the Manila Metropolitan Subway project represents a transformative step in bolstering urban connectivity and infrastructure. KDDI Group, through its subsidiary, remains committed to driving socio-economic development in developing countries, aligning with Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects.
