IN-SPACe’s Nod: Jio’s Giant Leap in Satellite-Based Connectivity

Reliance Jio is on the verge of obtaining crucial approvals from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) for its pioneering satellite-based gigabit fibre services in the country, as per media reports. The telecommunications giant has reportedly completed all necessary submissions to IN-SPACe, anticipating imminent authorization, a key step for deploying global satellite bandwidth capacity within India.

The approval process at IN-SPACe involves complex reviews from various governmental ministries. Pawan Goenka, IN-SPACe’s chairman, refrained from commenting on specific company approvals but acknowledged that several applications are currently under consideration.

Last October, Reliance Jio introduced JioSpaceFiber, India’s first satellite-based giga-fibre service. This initiative aims to provide fast and reliable internet connectivity to geographically remote and challenging regions. During the India Mobile Congress, Reliance outlined plans for extensive nationwide accessibility at competitive rates, highlighting successful connections in regions such as Gir, Korba, Nabarangpur, and ONGC-Jorhat.

In parallel developments, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data revealed that Reliance Jio gained 3.4 million wireless subscribers in September 2023, indicating growth compared to previous months. Additionally, as part of its commitment to fortify 5G infrastructure, Reliance Jio launched the Jio True 5G Developer Platform and Jio 5G Lab, aiming to stimulate 5G innovation among startups and enterprises on its network.
