The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) has taken a significant stride towards enhancing India’s digital landscape by launching the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) on August 9, 2023. The inauguration took place at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, with key dignitaries, including Smt. Sunita Verma, Shri Arvind Kumar, and Dr. S. D. Sudarshan, leading the initiative.
Empowering Innovation through IWBDC
The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge, a collaborative effort by MeitY, the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), and C-DAC Bangalore, stands as an open challenge competition aimed at fostering innovation among technology enthusiasts, developers, and innovators across India. The primary goal of this challenge is to create an indigenous web browser that boasts cutting-edge functionalities, advanced security features, and data privacy protection. Moreover, the browser should include its trust store with an integrated CCA India root certificate, focusing on accessibility, user-friendliness, and the ability to digitally sign documents using a crypto token, thus elevating the level of secure transactions and digital interactions.
Fostering Digital Empowerment through IWBDC
Smt. Sunita Verma, representing Shri Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary of MeitY, underscored the challenge’s role in advancing India’s digital sovereignty through the development of a homegrown web browser. She emphasized that digital innovation will be a pivotal factor in realizing the vision of a self-reliant and digitally empowered India. Shri Arvind Kumar from CCA, MeitY, stressed the significance of trustworthiness and security in digital certificates, while Shri S D Sudarshan, Executive Director of C-DAC Bangalore, provided insights into the challenge’s structure, the selection process, and the prizes awaiting the winners.

The launch event witnessed enthusiastic participation from a diverse range of sectors, including government departments, industries, startups, and academia. With over 200 participants engaging through both online and offline modes, the program displayed the widespread interest and commitment to the development of an Indian Web Browser.
