Google Messages Set to Embrace Multi-SIM Support for RCS Chats

In a bid to elevate user experience and connectivity options, Google is reportedly working on integrating Rich Communication Services (RCS) support for its Messages app across multiple SIM cards. This enhancement is designed to expand the functionality to both SIM cards on dual SIM smartphones, offering a seamless RCS chat experience.

Currently, Google’s RCS chat feature is available exclusively on the default or preferred call SIM, with potential availability for other SIMs hinted at for the future. However, a recent APK decompilation of the latest Google Messages app suggests that the tech giant is inching closer to making this support a reality.

During a teardown of the Google Messages APK, 9to5Google discovered various lines of code related to multi-SIM RCS support. The extracted code revealed a new RCS toggle that allows users to turn on/off RCS chats for “all numbers” or “both numbers.”

While the server-side elements for the dual/multi-SIM RCS support in Messages are yet to be enabled by Google, the feature appears to be making its way to some users. Screenshots shared on Reddit showcase the upcoming capability, indicating that once activated, the app will provide an option to turn on RCS chats for both SIMs in the phone.

Presently, the app displays a button to toggle RCS chats on/off, along with a connection status for the primary SIM card. However, upon the activation of dual/multi-SIM support, the app will feature a list of both SIMs in settings, complete with checkboxes. This allows users to effortlessly manage RCS chat preferences for either both SIMs or a specific one.

Last month, Google celebrated a significant milestone as its Messages app surpassed one billion monthly active users. Alongside this achievement, Google introduced a feature drop for Google Messages, offering enhancements like Photomoji for AI-powered conversation personalization, Voice Moods, Screen Effects, Custom Bubbles, Reaction Effects, Animated Emoji, and Profiles for user identity personalization.
