In a recent development, Google has issued an apology for the alleged bias in its AI platform Gemini’s responses to queries related to Prime Minister Modi. The search giant acknowledged the unreliability of its results and assured swift action to address the concerns raised by the Centre.
The apology comes after the Ministry of Information Technology and Electronics sent a notice to Google, seeking an explanation for what it deemed “unsubstantiated results” from Gemini. MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar revealed that Google promptly admitted the unreliability of the platform, stating, “Sorry, the platform is unreliable.”
Last week, the IT Ministry issued an advisory to generative Artificial Intelligence companies, including Google and OpenAI, emphasizing that their services should not generate responses that violate Indian laws. Platforms offering “under-testing/unreliable” AI systems to Indian users must seek explicit permission from the Centre and appropriately label the potential fallibility or unreliability of the output.
Additionally, the government has urged these platforms to implement a traceability requirement by adding identifiable markers to generated content. This measure aims to trace back the origin of misinformation or deepfakes, ensuring accountability for the content produced by AI systems.
