Starting later this year, the tech giant will extend its repair program to include the use of genuine Apple parts from older iPhones to fix newer models. The initiative, set to launch initially for iPhone 15 models and newer, signifies a major shift in Apple’s repair policy. While customers previously faced limited options, often resorting to costly repairs or uncertified third-party solutions, the inclusion of used parts opens up a new avenue for affordable and reliable repairs.

John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, emphasizes the environmental benefits of this approach, highlighting how the extended lifespan of repaired devices aligns with Apple’s commitment to sustainability. By enabling the use of pre-owned parts without compromising safety or quality, Apple aims to reduce electronic waste and promote responsible consumption.

To ensure the integrity and security of repaired iPhones, Apple has implemented stringent measures, including a “pairing” process to authenticate used parts. This not only safeguards against counterfeit components but also guarantees that repaired devices meet original factory standards.

Furthermore, Apple is enhancing transparency for users by introducing new features within iOS to indicate whether a part is new or used. Through the “Parts and Service History” section in Settings, customers can easily track the repair history of their devices, empowering them with valuable information about the components used.

As Apple continues to expand its repair program, incorporating advancements such as biometric sensors for Face ID and Touch ID from older devices, the company reaffirms its commitment to customer satisfaction and environmental stewardship.
