Elon Musk’s X Introduces Passkeys: A Password-Free Authentication Option

Streamlining Security and Convenience in Social Media Login with Passkeys

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has rolled out passkeys as an alternative authentication method for iPhone users globally, aiming to enhance security and simplify login experiences.

Understanding Passkeys:

Passkeys offer a secure and user-friendly alternative to traditional passwords, generated individually by users’ devices for each account. This method aims to mitigate security risks associated with passwords, such as phishing attacks and unauthorized access, by providing unique credentials for every login attempt.

How Passkeys Work:

Once enabled, passkeys eliminate the need for users to memorize login information, as they are automatically generated and securely backed up for easy recovery. Users can seamlessly log in to their X accounts across various devices without the hassle of resetting forgotten passwords.

Enabling Passkeys on X:

To activate passkeys on the X app, users can follow these simple steps:

  1. Log in to the X app with the desired account.
  2. Navigate to “Your account” in the app’s navigation bar.
  3. Access “Settings and privacy,” then proceed to “Security and account access.”
  4. Under “Additional password protection,” select “Passkey.”
  5. Follow the prompts to add a passkey, entering the required information when prompted.

Important Considerations:

While passkeys offer enhanced security, they are not mandatory for logging in to X accounts. Additionally, new users cannot sign up with a passkey initially; they must create a password for their first-time account setup.
