Elon Musk’s X Ends Blue Check Concealment Option for Premium Users

Platform’s Decision Raises Questions Amidst Changing Verification Policies

Users of Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, received a notification on Thursday revealing that the ability to hide their blue checkmarks, previously exclusive to Premium users, will no longer be available.

The move marks a significant shift in X’s verification policies, as the platform had previously allowed users to opt-out of displaying the coveted blue tick. However, the rationale behind this decision remains unclear, leaving users questioning the platform’s motives and the timeline for the implementation of this change.

Initially introduced as a status symbol, the blue checkmark’s significance waned when X shifted to a paid verification system under Elon Musk’s ownership. With the blue check becoming synonymous with Premium subscriptions, instances of misuse, including scams and impersonations, led to online harassment and mass blocking directed at verified accounts.

X later expanded the blue check eligibility to accounts boasting over a million followers, encompassing numerous celebrities, public figures, and even accounts of deceased individuals. However, the recent distribution of free blue checks to high-follower accounts, regardless of user preference, sparked controversy and caught many users by surprise.

In response, some newly designated Premium and Premium Plus users sought to conceal their blue checkmarks to dissociate from the associated stigma. Nevertheless, the platform’s decision to remove this option leaves these users with limited recourse.
