Crnogorski Telekom Phases Out 3G Network for Next-Gen 4G and 5G Services

Crnogorski Telekom (CT), Montenegro’s prominent telecom service provider, is poised to bid farewell to its 3G network by the year-end, making way for advanced 4G and 5G technologies. This strategic move underscores CT’s commitment to delivering a superior user experience and ensuring its mobile network’s competitiveness in the evolving telecommunications landscape.

Embracing Technological Advancements

Crnogorski Telekom (CT) has officially announced the sunset of its 3G network, a decision driven by the network’s technical obsolescence. The company is gearing up to harness the potential of advanced technologies, including 4G and 5G, which have revolutionized data transmission speeds and opened doors to cutting-edge applications that were unimaginable in the 2G and 3G era.

Expansive Network Coverage

CT has continuously invested in network technologies, resulting in over 80 percent population coverage with 5G signals and an impressive 97 percent population coverage with the 4G network. This commitment to expansive coverage ensures that customers across Montenegro can experience the benefits of high-speed connectivity.

Pioneering VoLTE Technology

Crnogorski Telekom proudly holds the distinction of being the first to introduce Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology in Montenegro. This breakthrough innovation empowers users to enjoy seamless voice calls while simultaneously browsing the internet at high speeds on their mobile devices.

Efficiency of 4G and 5G

The superiority of 4G and 5G technologies in radio transmission efficiency compared to 3G is a compelling reason behind the phase-out decision. The existing 3G network, from a business perspective, has reached the end of its sustainable lifecycle. Consequently, CT is strategically planning to implement the phased shutdown of its 3G network by the end of the year. This action will enable the full allocation of spectrum and resources to further advance 4G and 5G technologies.

A Step Towards the Future

“At Crnogorski Telekom, we have laid the foundations for the further development of the 5G network at gigabit speeds. The frequency resources we own, including the spectrum that we will release by shutting down the outdated 3G technology, are a guarantee that we can provide a superior user experience in Montenegro, and ensure the competitiveness of our mobile 5G and 4G network in the coming years,” affirmed CT in an official statement.

Future-Proofing Through Spectrum

CT is future-proofing its position by securing an impressive share of 5G spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band, valid for 15 years. This spectrum acquisition was achieved through a spectrum auction conducted by the Agency for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (EKIP) in December 2022. It equips CT with the capability to deliver gigabit speeds and maintain a competitive edge in the dynamic telecom industry.
