Builder.ai Faces Scrutiny Over Founders’ Past: Microsoft and SoftBank-Backed Startup Under Investigation

Allegations Against Sachin Dev Duggal and Saurabh Dhoot Prompt Questions About Leadership Integrity

Amidst the meteoric rise of Builder.ai, a prominent AI-driven startup backed by tech giants Microsoft and SoftBank, scrutiny has intensified over the past dealings of its key figures in India. Sachin Dev Duggal and Saurabh Dhoot, instrumental in the company’s trajectory, find themselves embroiled in legal proceedings stemming from their previous business engagements, raising concerns about the startup’s leadership integrity.

Established in 2016 as Engineer.ai before rebranding, Builder.ai aims to revolutionize app and website development through artificial intelligence, drawing parallels to the simplicity of ordering pizza. Despite its innovative approach and substantial financial backing, Builder.ai now faces challenges as allegations against its founders surface.

According to a report by The Financial Times, Duggal is entangled in a money laundering case linked to the collapse of Videocon, a conglomerate he was previously associated with. The accusations date back to transactions occurring between 2008 and 2012, implicating Duggal in the transfer of funds from Videocon to an Indian company he founded, allegedly routed through Videocon’s international entities.

Similarly, Dhoot faces allegations in a loan fraud probe involving Videocon, allegedly orchestrated by his uncle, Venugopal Dhoot. The scheme purportedly aimed to secure fraudulent loans from an Indian bank, with funds misallocated to various Videocon accounts. Both Duggal and Dhoot vehemently deny any wrongdoing, with their legal representatives asserting cooperation with authorities and challenging the accusations.

While Builder.ai emphasizes that the investigations do not pertain to the startup itself, questions loom over the leadership’s integrity and past associations. The company clarifies that Dhoot’s role was advisory, distancing him from the founding team or executive positions. Nonetheless, inquiries into these matters prompted adjustments in public references to Dhoot’s association with Builder.ai.

As legal proceedings unfold and public scrutiny intensifies, Builder.ai navigates the delicate balance between innovation and accountability, grappling with the repercussions of its founders’ past dealings.
