BSNL’s Strategic Move: Tapping into Vi Network for 4G Spells Tough Competition for Airtel and Jio

In response to the increasing exodus of users to private operators, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s state-run telecom company, is taking proactive steps to retain its customer base. With Airtel and Jio dominating the telecom landscape, BSNL’s move to leverage Vodafone Idea’s 4G network signals a new era of competition in the industry.

BSNL’s Proposal to the Government:

In an effort to counter the decline in subscriber numbers, BSNL has approached the government with a proposal to utilize Vodafone Idea’s 4G network for its services. The collaboration hinges on the fact that the government holds a substantial 33.1% share in Vodafone Idea, making this strategic partnership a plausible solution.

BSNL argues that this collaboration would expedite the nationwide rollout of 4G services, particularly in areas where its network coverage is currently lacking.

Addressing the Shift to Competitors:

Acknowledging the migration of users to competitors offering 5G services, BSNL recognizes the importance of upgrading its offerings. By tapping into Vodafone Idea’s 4G network, BSNL aims to provide competitive services, preventing further customer attrition to rivals like Jio and Airtel.

Employee Union’s Support:

The BSNL Employee Union has thrown its weight behind the proposal, writing to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in support. They emphasize the strategic advantage of this collaboration, given the government’s significant stake in both telecom companies.

This collaboration represents a crucial step in fortifying BSNL’s service offerings and securing its competitive position in the telecom market.
