Breaking Boundaries: Deutsche Telekom’s 5G Network Slicing for Mobile Broadcasting

Deutsche Telekom has unveiled an innovative breakthrough in mobile journalism by highlighting the remarkable capabilities of 5G Network Slicing within 5G Networks. This groundbreaking feature empowers mobile journalists to transmit high-quality live videos through smartphones or tablets seamlessly. With this new service now available, it guarantees stable broadcasting for live events, ensuring dedicated bandwidth for flawless data transmission.

In a recent announcement, Deutsche Telekom shed light on the transformative landscape of TV reporting, where mobile broadcasting is taking center stage, supplanting cumbersome SNG broadcasting vans with agile mobile backpack solutions.

Deutsche Telekom’s 5G Live Video Production Product

Deutsche Telekom underlined its successful collaboration with RTL Deutschland in testing the “5G Live Video Production” product last year, a solution now being rolled out to the public. This cutting-edge service offers rock-solid broadcasting capabilities for live events, enabling television teams to transmit their live HD video streams reliably, even in the absence of satellite connections.

Network Slicing Feature

Deutsche Telekom’s innovative solution tackles the challenge of seamless live image broadcasting head-on. It leverages a separate network segment known as a “Slice” within the 5G Standalone Network to create a dedicated space for high-quality broadcasting. This ensures the vital bandwidth needed for uninterrupted data transmission.

RTL Deutschland applauded the development, stating, “Telekom’s 5G standalone network meets the high demands of TV production. We will increasingly use the technology for live broadcasting in the future. With RTL+, we have already established a successful partnership with Telekom at MagentaTV. For UEFA EURO 2024, we most recently agreed on a full production partnership. Our collaboration on 5G live production is now another milestone in technology development and innovation in the German TV market.”

Deutsche Telekom’s mission is to bring mobile journalists closer to their audiences by facilitating stable real-time broadcasting of high-quality videos via smartphones or tablets. According to Telekom, Network Slicing and 5G Live Video Production are compatible with the Telekom 5G network on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 series running iOS 17, as well as the 11-inch iPad Pro (4th generation) and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (6th generation) running iPadOS 17.

Empowering Mobile Journalism with 5G

Telekom emphasizes that “5G Mobile Journalism” provides an efficient solution for professional video streaming, simplifying the process for reporters to deliver high-quality content to their audiences.

Deutsche Telekom’s 5G Network

Deutsche Telekom, an early pioneer in the 5G arena, initially introduced 5G with 5G NSA in 2019 and is currently in the testing phase for 5G Standalone (5G SA). The operator proudly states that all its sites in the 3.6 GHz and 2.1 GHz bands are fully prepared for 5G Standalone deployment.

Seamless Live Imagery with 5G Network Slicing

The announcement underscores the success achieved during testing when RTL and Telekom harnessed 5G Network Slicing to transmit real-time video signals. Network Slicing, a pivotal feature of 5G Standalone, empowers the creation of multiple virtual network slices, each tailored with unique service characteristics to meet specific requirements. This innovative technology ensures consistent upload speeds, even during network congestion.
