Beyond Broadcasts: WhatsApp Channels Hits 500 Million and Unveils Sticker Integration

WhatsApp Channels, the one-way broadcast feature that took the messaging platform by storm, has reached a remarkable milestone with over 500 million monthly active users. As this revolutionary tool gains even more traction, a new beta update is set to add an exciting twist – Stickers. However, this addition comes with a twist of its own, as messages on WhatsApp Channels lack end-to-end encryption.

Launched in 150 countries, including India, in September of this year, WhatsApp Channels offers users a unique way to share updates with a broad audience. Similar to Instagram Broadcast, these channels enable select users, primarily the owners, to broadcast messages while allowing others to react. With a directory search functionality, users can easily find channels created by celebrities, businesses, or content creators.

Sticker Access for Channels: A New Frontier According to a recent report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently testing a beta update that introduces Sticker sharing for Channel admins. The feature, initially available to select beta testers, includes not only static stickers but also animated and dynamic ones. This is a significant enhancement that adds a playful and expressive element to the communication on WhatsApp Channels.

How to Check Sticker Access on WhatsApp Channels: To determine whether you have access to the new Sticker feature on Channels, ensure that your WhatsApp beta version is up to date. Navigate to your Channel tab, pull up the keyboard, and check for the presence of the Stickers option alongside the emoji keyboard. If visible, you have access to the feature. The report suggests that this capability will gradually roll out to more beta testers over the next few weeks.

Massive User Uptake in Record Time: In an announcement within WhatsApp Channels, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the platform reached the staggering milestone of 500 million monthly active users within just seven weeks. Positioned in the Updates tab on iOS and Android smartphones, WhatsApp Channels has quickly become a go-to source for real-time information and updates.

End-to-End Encryption Concerns: It’s crucial to note that messages on WhatsApp Channels lack end-to-end encryption, a departure from the standard WhatsApp security feature. While Channel owners can post updates and messages, followers can react to those messages. However, all messages are visible in a Channel for only 30 days from the time of their initial sharing.

As WhatsApp Channels continues to reshape the landscape of mass communication, the addition of Stickers is poised to make interactions even more dynamic and engaging.
