AT&T Outage 2024: A Widespread Disruption Shakes Cellular and Internet Services

Happy Thursday morning! While February is coming to a close with a hint of warmer weather in some parts of the country, AT&T users are facing a massive outage affecting both cellular and internet services, creating quite a chaos.

When did the AT&T outage start?

The AT&T outage commenced around 4:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, February 22, with more than 32,000 reported outages. By 7:00 a.m., the number surged to over 50,000, and just before 9:15 a.m., nearly 75,000 outage reports flooded the Down Detector website.

The areas hit hardest by the AT&T outage, according to Down Detector, include Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Reports also surfaced from various parts of Florida, Michigan, and New York. AT&T subscribers can check the outage map on the Down Detector website or AT&T’s own map to see if their area is affected.

Are other cellular networks down?

While AT&T bears the brunt of the issues, it’s not alone. Cricket Wireless, a prepaid carrier using AT&T’s network, reports over 12,000 outages as of 9:15 a.m. ET. Verizon experienced a spike in outage reports exceeding 4,000, and similar trends are observed for Consumer Cellular, T-Mobile, Boost Mobile, US Cellular, and Straight Talk.

In the case of Verizon and T-Mobile, both carriers confirmed that their networks aren’t directly affected. Reports on platforms like Down Detector are likely due to users from these networks attempting to contact AT&T users.

When will the AT&T outage be over?

AT&T acknowledged the outage to NBC News, stating, “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning.” The company is actively working to restore service urgently and advises impacted subscribers to use “Wi-Fi calling until service is restored.”

As of now, the AT&T Twitter account (now on X) is actively responding to customer complaints, but the timeline for a full restoration remains unclear.
