In Short
- Apple may have paused development on the Vision Pro 2.
- The company plans to release a cheaper Vision headset with fewer features next year.
- The Vision Pro 2 is not canceled and may resume development in the future.
Vision Pro 2 Development Halted
Apple’s ambitious plans for the Vision Pro 2 appear to be on hold. According to a report by The Information, Apple has suspended work on its next-generation Vision Pro headset. The information comes from supply chain vendors involved in the Vision Pro’s assembly, indicating a strategic shift in response to the weaker-than-expected demand for Apple’s Spatial Computer since its launch six months ago.
Focus Shifts to a Cheaper Vision Product
While the Vision Pro 2 might be delayed, Apple hasn’t completely abandoned its vision. The company is now prioritizing the development of a more affordable mixed-reality headset, expected to hit the market next year. This new device will offer fewer features than the Vision Pro, making it a more accessible option for consumers reluctant to spend $3499 on a high-end headset.
Two-Tier Vision Product Line
Apple originally planned to develop two products in the Vision Pro line: a high-end model (Vision Pro 2) and a lower-cost standard version. While the Vision Pro 2 is on hold, the lower-cost model remains in development. Apple began working on this budget-friendly mixed-reality headset in 2022, codenamed “N109,” with an intended price point similar to a top-tier iPhone ($1599).
Challenges in Reducing Costs
Apple’s primary challenge in creating a cheaper Vision headset is deciding which features to cut without significantly impacting the user experience. Initially, Apple considered reducing component costs and developing an upgraded display for the next-generation model. However, the company has now instructed at least one supplier to halt work on the Vision Pro 2. The affordable version, despite fewer features, is still being developed, though its release might be delayed beyond the end of 2025.
Retaining Key Features in the Cheaper Model
Apple aims to retain some of the Vision Pro’s premium features in the cheaper model, particularly its high-end display, which is one of the most expensive components. The low-cost variant might feature the same premium displays but with a simpler headband, fewer cameras, and smaller speakers. Additionally, Apple plans to make this affordable headset at least one-third lighter than the current Vision Pro.
Production Adjustments
In response to lower-than-expected demand, a supplier producing key components for the Vision Pro reduced production by 50% in May. Apple has produced no more than 500,000 Vision Pro units this year and does not plan to increase production until after August.
The Future of Vision Pro
The Apple Vision Pro is a technological marvel, offering groundbreaking features. However, its high price tag of $3499 has limited its appeal. The weak adoption has led some to consider the Vision Pro a rare misstep for Apple. By focusing on a more affordable version, Apple hopes to broaden its customer base and achieve success with its Vision line.
