Alarming Surge in Spam Calls Despite “Do Not Disturb” List Registration, Reveals LocalCircles Survey

A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles has brought to light a concerning trend, indicating that a staggering 90% of respondents continue to receive spam calls on a daily basis, even after enrolling in the “Do Not Disturb” (DND) list. The survey, encompassing 60,000 participants across 378 districts, unveils the persistent challenge faced by consumers in combatting bothersome calls related to financial services, real estate offerings, and various other products.

Despite being on the DND list, the majority of participants reported receiving between 1-2 spam calls daily, while a smaller percentage disclosed being bombarded with over 10 such calls every day. The findings shed light on the ineffectiveness of the existing measures in curbing the onslaught of unwanted calls.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which has endeavored to address the issue in recent years, appears to have made limited progress, as evidenced by the experiences of those surveyed. The frequency of spam calls from different mobile numbers has seen an increase from 29% in February 2023 to 36% in February 2024, indicating a growing challenge for regulators and telecom operators alike.

The survey also identified specific sources of these calls, with 40% of respondents pointing to a prominent non-banking financial services firm as the primary culprit, closely followed by spam calls originating from a leading private sector bank. Furthermore, nearly half of the surveyed mobile subscribers (48%) reported receiving the majority of pesky calls from various mobile numbers, seemingly from individual callers.
