5G Connectivity Making Its Way to Delhi Metro’s Underground Stations

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is gearing up to enhance network connectivity within its metro stations by bringing 5G connectivity to all the underground stations under the Delhi Metro umbrella. Currently, the Delhi Metro boasts a total of 69 underground stations, and an impressive 29 of them have already been upgraded to provide seamless 5G connectivity. The focus now shifts to the remaining 40 underground stations, as DMRC aims to elevate the digital experience for commuters.

Underground Revolution: Enabling 5G in Delhi Metro

The initiative to introduce 5G connectivity within Delhi Metro’s underground stations underscores DMRC’s commitment to providing advanced communication capabilities to passengers. The initial step involved upgrading 29 stations, and now the focus is on equipping the remaining underground stations with the necessary infrastructure for 5G connectivity.

Partnerships for Progress

DMRC is collaborating with prominent telecom service providers, including Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), to facilitate the implementation of 5G connectivity. The strategy involves the installation of cables and other essential infrastructure, thereby enabling 5G access for commuters. This partnership is vital in ensuring a comprehensive and efficient deployment of 5G technology.

The Path Forward: Challenges and Solutions

The project involves the intricate task of laying cables and installing equipment throughout the extensive underground network and stations. This complex endeavor is projected to be completed over the next four to five months. To provide robust 5G connectivity, DMRC is utilizing telecom equipment such as in-building solutions (IBS) at the underground stations. Additionally, small cells and repeaters are being deployed to bolster signal strength and coverage, spanning an area of approximately 100 meters.

Balancing Act: Minimal Disruption

Installing telecom infrastructure for 5G connectivity within underground metro stations presents its share of challenges. The DMRC official highlighted the meticulous approach, as upgrade work can only be carried out during nighttime hours to ensure minimal disruption to metro services.

5G Landscape in India

As the nation embraces 5G connectivity, major players like Jio and Airtel have been actively fortifying their 5G networks following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement in October 2022. Both telecom giants recently announced the completion of the initial phase of 5G rollout in India. While Jio aims to achieve pan-India 5G coverage by the end of 2023, Airtel has set its target for March 2024. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea is yet to commence its 5G service rollout. This means that soon, Airtel and Jio subscribers can experience high-speed 5G connectivity throughout the expanse of the Delhi Metro, while Vi users await their turn for the service’s availability.
