3G Becomes History in Tallinn as Telia Estonia Focuses on 4G and 5G

Telia Estonia recently bid farewell to its 3G network in Tallinn during the first week of September, marking a significant shift towards bolstering its mobile services through 4G and 5G technologies. This decision follows the trend of discontinuing 3G services in various regions, including Laane County (March), Rapla County, Parnu County (April), and Harju County (May).

The 3G Sunset

Telia Estonia initiated the shutdown of its 3G network in Tallinn between September 4th and 7th, completing a process that aligns with the evolving landscape of mobile connectivity. The company recognized that, at the beginning of 2023, mobile internet traffic on the 3G network accounted for merely 1 percent of Telia’s total mobile internet usage. Consequently, Telia deemed it logical to discontinue the 3G network, especially since it was primarily used for voice communication.

Transition to 4G and 5G

Telia Estonia has observed a growing trend among its customers who are opting for the more advanced 4G and 5G networks. This shift is notably evident in Tallinn, where Telia’s 5G network now handles three times more data than it did at the start of the year.

Expanding 5G and Enhancing 4G

In line with this transition, Telia Estonia has been actively expanding its 5G network. Tallinn boasts 150 5G base stations that cover a significant portion of the capital. This expansion not only elevates 5G capabilities but also enhances the speed and overall user experience of the 4G network. As customers increasingly migrate to 4G and 5G, it liberates valuable spectrum resources in the 4G network.

A Greener Future

Telia Estonia also highlighted the positive environmental impact of discontinuing the 3G network. By phasing out 3G operations, the company contributes to a reduction in its environmental footprint.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Telia plans to continue the phase-out of its 3G network in Saaremaa and Hiiumaa at the beginning of October, followed by Ida and Laane-Viru counties. This strategic decision aligns with the broader industry trend towards embracing faster and more efficient network technologies.
