Speedster Shubman Gill: Creating ODI History with 2,000 Runs in Record Time

In a sensational display of batting prowess, Indian opener Shubman Gill made history during the ICC Men’s World Cup match against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22. Gill achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the fastest batter to amass 2,000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket.

Gill’s extraordinary achievement occurred in just 38 innings, an impressive feat that outpaced the previous record held by South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who took 40 innings to reach the same milestone.

As the Indian team chased a target of 274 runs set by New Zealand, Gill’s record-breaking moment took center stage. With six centuries and 10 half-centuries to his name in 37 ODI matches for India, Gill has consistently been a standout performer in the format. However, during this particular match, he couldn’t convert his strong start into a substantial score and was dismissed for 26 runs from 31 deliveries.

The moment of glory arrived for Shubman Gill during the seventh over of India’s run chase against New Zealand. With just 14 runs needed, he elegantly dispatched a delivery from Trent Boult to the boundary, sealing his place in the record books as the fastest to 2,000 ODI runs.

Notably, Gill also holds the distinction of being the highest run-scorer in the calendar year, accumulating an impressive total of 1,325 runs in 25 matches thus far.

It’s worth mentioning that Gill faced a challenging start to the World Cup, as he was diagnosed with dengue and missed India’s initial two matches in the tournament against Australia and Afghanistan. He made a remarkable comeback in a high-profile encounter against Pakistan, where he scored 16 runs.

The clash between India and New Zealand in Dharamsala showcased the sheer determination and talent of Shubman Gill as he etched his name in ODI cricket history.
