Grandmaster Vidit Gujarathi and Coach Abhijit Kunte to Shine at Asian Games 2023

Grandmaster Vidit Gujarathi and Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte are set to make India proud as they represent the nation in chess at the much-anticipated Asian Games 2023, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China.

Chess enthusiasts will be delighted to know that chess is making a triumphant return to the Asian Games after a hiatus of 13 years, with its last appearance dating back to 2010. With a formidable contingent boasting a blend of seasoned professionals and young prodigies, both India and China are expected to be strong contenders in this cerebral sport.

Vidit Gujarathi will be a key player in the Indian men’s team, showcasing his prowess in both the men’s individual rapid and team rapid events. The Indian men’s chess team is regarded as a formidable force with the likes of rising stars R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh, and Arjun Erigaisi, along with the seasoned expertise of Vidit Gujarathi and Pentala Harikrishna. Vidit will be actively participating in both individual and team events, doubling the excitement for chess enthusiasts.

Abhijit Kunte, an illustrious chess player in his own right, will contribute to the women’s team as a coach. His previous coaching stint led the women’s team to a remarkable silver medal win at the FIDE World Team’s Championship. The women’s chess team is equally strong, featuring renowned players such as Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Savitha Shri B, and Vantika Aggarwal. Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli will be competing in both individual and team events, adding to the anticipation of their performances.

Vidit Gujarathi, Indian Chess Grandmaster, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It feels great to be representing India at the Asian Games, especially when chess is making a comeback after 13 long years. The format looks interesting, with both individual and team events. We had a good training camp in Kolkata and now eagerly looking forward to flying to Hangzhou. Expectations are high, and we are focused on winning medals for the country.”

Abhijit Kunte, Indian Chess Grandmaster and coach, added, “It is amazing to see chess coming back to the Asian Games. All the players are pumped up, and morale is high. Preparations are in full swing, and the aim is to win medals for India and make the country proud.”

Vidit Gujarathi, currently based in Nashik, Maharashtra, is a prominent figure in Indian chess. He is employed at ONGC and supported by Lakshya Foundation, Bharat Forge, sponsored by Persistent Systems, and Immortal Game.

Abhijit Kunte, who works with the Indian Oil Corporation, has played a crucial role as the coach of the Indian women’s team on numerous occasions. His dedication to the sport earned him the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Award in 2021.
