BCCI Clarifies: No Plans For Official Visit To Pakistan During Asia Cup 2023

New Delhi, 12th July 2023: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has categorically denied reports circulating in the Pakistani media about BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s official visit to Pakistan during the Asia Cup 2023. In an interview with News18 CricketNext, Shah clarified that he has not agreed to any visit and stated that the reports were a result of miscommunication or intentional mischief. He firmly stated, “I will not be making any visit.”

Arun Dhumal, the BCCI representative at the International Cricket Council (ICC), also dismissed the claims of Shah or any other BCCI official traveling to Pakistan. Dhumal affirmed in an interview with News18 CricketNext that the reports were entirely false. Despite Shah’s strong denial, the “hybrid arrangement” for the Asia Cup tournament, with Pakistan hosting four games and Sri Lanka hosting nine games including all knockouts and the final, will remain in place. This arrangement had been previously agreed upon by all parties, including the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Questioning the credibility of the reports, a reliable source pointed out that all of India’s matches, including potential knockouts, will be played in Sri Lanka, making it unlikely for any Indian official to visit Pakistan. The source suggested the possibility of mischief behind the reports. The meeting between Shah and PCB chief Zaka Ashraf at the ongoing ICC meet in Durban primarily focused on discussions regarding the Asia Cup and the upcoming World Cup to be held in India later this year. However, no agreement was reached regarding Shah’s visit to Pakistan. The source reiterated that the hybrid arrangement for the Asia Cup will continue as planned due to Pakistan’s insistence on it.

Apart from the Asia Cup, the officials also discussed Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India. The World Cup schedule confirms that Pakistan’s matches will be held in Ahmedabad, and there are no anticipated changes to the itinerary. The PCB has given its approval to the ICC regarding Pakistan’s participation in the marquee event, and according to BCCI officials, there is no further information to add on this matter
