As December unfolds, NASA has provided skywatchers with a celestial roadmap for the month, highlighting various astronomical events that promise to captivate observers. From the moon’s dance with planets to the spectacular Geminid meteor shower and a rare asteroid appearance, the night sky is set to showcase a dazzling array of celestial wonders.

What’s Up: December 2023 Skywatching Tips from NASA

Moon and Planets:

  • December 7-10: Crescent moon in proximity to Venus and the bright Spica star.
  • December 17: Moon hanging just below Saturn, with a chance to spot Saturn’s giant moon Titan through binoculars.
  • December 21-22: Moon appearing close to Jupiter, one of the brightest planets in the night sky.

Meteor Shower:

  • Geminids Meteor Shower peaks on the night of December 13, potentially offering skywatchers the chance to witness up to one meteor per minute.
  • Northern Hemisphere viewers can spot meteors from 9 or 10 p.m. on December 13, with the peak between midnight and morning twilight.
  • Southern Hemisphere viewers will also have a view, though at a quarter of the rate compared to the Northern Hemisphere.

Asteroid Sighting:

  • Opportunity to see asteroid Vesta zipping by Earth.
  • Best viewing times around 1 or 2 a.m. when Vesta appears about halfway up the eastern sky.
  • Vesta visible between the raised arm of Orion and the leg of Castor in Gemini. Around December 8, Vesta will appear between Betelgeuse and Propus.
