Total Solar Eclipse 2024: An Astronomical Spectacle on the Horizon

Attention to all stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts! You’re in for a treat as the biggest celestial event of the year is about to happen soon!

It’s called a total solar eclipse, and it will occur at night.

The eclipse will take place in North America across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Unfortunately, the people in India will not be able to witness it. Nonetheless, scientists say that this kind of eclipse is rare, and it occurs when the moon moves in between the sun and the Earth, temporarily blocking out the sun’s light.

The sky will become dark, similar to a sunrise or sunset. If you’re curious about the specifics of when and where this will take place, please keep reading!

WHEN AND WHERE:

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will be visible across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, starting in the South Pacific Ocean. The duration of full darkness, when the moon completely covers the sun, will be around three to four minutes. The eclipse will begin at 11:07 a.m. PDT, in Mexico, and move northeast to Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT.

The route goes through several states and ends in Canada’s Maritime Provinces. The longest period of total darkness will be around 4 minutes and 27 seconds near Torreon, Mexico, almost twice as long as the 2017 eclipse.

How To Watch? Total Solar Eclipse 2024:

Safety is paramount when viewing a solar eclipse. Looking directly at the sun, even partially, can cause permanent eye damage. Here’s how to enjoy the show safely:

  1. Use certified solar eclipse glasses: These specially designed glasses filter out harmful solar radiation, allowing you to view the eclipse comfortably. Never use sunglasses, regular eyeglasses, or homemade filters.
  2. Project the eclipse: Use a pinhole camera, a telescope with a solar filter, or other projection methods to safely view the eclipse indirectly.
  3. Find an eclipse viewing event: Many organisations and astronomy clubs host safe viewing events, often equipped with telescopes and educational resources.
