Thanks to the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and facial recognition technology, we now have an intriguing answer – geese can distinguish individual faces.
The revelation of this avian facial recognition ability stemmed from the work of Sonia Kleindorfer, who took over as the director of the Konrad Lorenz Research Center for Behavior and Cognition in Vienna, Austria. Her predecessor, the renowned Austrian biologist Konrad Lorenz, had such an intimate knowledge of the local Greylag Geese that he could identify them by name solely by looking at photographs of their faces displayed on a plaque.
After inheriting this unique challenge, Kleindorfer sought innovative solutions and collaborated with a colleague to develop an AI-based facial recognition system. This system was meticulously trained on a comprehensive database of geese images, capturing various angles and details. Ultimately, it enabled the system to identify individual geese based on the distinctive markers on their beaks.
The research did not stop at this point. To delve deeper into the world of goose drama, the scientists employed the AI-generated goose identification system to investigate if geese could recognize other geese. What they discovered was fascinating – geese could indeed identify photos of their companions, allies, and adversaries. However, the geese were unable to recognize their own reflections, as they do not perceive reflections readily.
This breakthrough in our understanding of geese’s facial recognition capabilities sheds light on the complexity of their social interactions and adds depth to their dramatic narratives. Geese, rather than relying on other cues, appear to differentiate between friends, partners, and foes primarily by their facial features – the same markers that the AI system utilized.
