India’s ambitious space exploration mission, Chandrayaan-3, is all set to embark on its momentous journey to the Moon. The highly anticipated mission was launched on July 14, propelling the spacecraft aboard India’s heaviest rocket, Launch Vehicle Mark-III, also known as LVM3. As the lunar spacecraft currently orbits the Earth, the next crucial step, the trans lunar injection, is scheduled to take place tonight.
The Trans Lunar Injection (TLI) is a critical propulsive maneuver used to set the spacecraft on a precise trajectory towards the Moon. It involves a powerful burn, usually carried out by a chemical rocket engine, which significantly boosts the spacecraft’s velocity.
By increasing the spacecraft’s velocity, the TLI alters its orbit from a circular low Earth orbit to a highly eccentric one. The TLI burn is carefully calculated and timed to align with the Moon’s orbital path around the Earth.
The timing of the TLI burn is essential, ensuring that the spacecraft reaches its nearest point (apogee) just as the Moon approaches. As a result, the spacecraft enters the Moon’s sphere of influence, initiating a hyperbolic lunar swingby.
