In the vast expanse of space, the holiday spirit is alive as the European Southern Observatory (ESO) unveils a captivating image of the Running Chicken Nebula. Located 6,500 light-years away in the Centaurus constellation, this cosmic masterpiece was captured in stunning detail by the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) at ESO’s Paranal site in Chile.
The Running Chicken Nebula, spanning an area in the sky equivalent to about 25 full moons, was photographed in a remarkable 1.5 billion pixel resolution. ESO’s press release describes the nebula as a unique celestial formation, with its vibrant pinkish hue created by the intense radiation emitted by its young stars, illuminating the surrounding hydrogen.
At the heart of the nebula lies IC 2944, a bright, vertical pillar-like structure, while the brightest region, IC 2948, showcases a silhouette resembling a chicken’s head or rear end, depending on the observer’s perspective. The pastel contours, composed of gas and dust plumes, contribute to the nebula’s breathtaking appearance.
The intricate details of the image, captured using the OmegaCAM on the VST, reveal additional regions such as Gum 39, Gum 40, and Gum 41, each adding to the cosmic mosaic. Countless stars, in varying shades of orange, white, and blue, further enhance the beauty of this celestial wonder.
But what exactly gives the nebula its whimsical chicken-like appearance? The presence of numerous stars, emitting intense radiation, sculpts the spatial environment into a shape reminiscent of a running chicken. In certain regions, resilient structures known as Bok globules withstand this stellar bombardment, creating voids within the chicken silhouette.
According to ESO, the image spans a width of 270 light-years, a distance that would take an average chicken almost 21 billion years to traverse—significantly longer than the age of our universe.
