Pune: Politics is heating up over the drug issue in the city. While the opposition is targeting the government, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol has said that he has instructed the Commissioner of Police to launch an independent campaign and deploy manpower to curb the drug menace in the city.
Minors were seen consuming narcotics in the washroom of L3 – Liquid Leisure Lounge on FC Road. A drugs party was underway, where there was no age restriction.
Some youths were consuming drugs in a toilet while minors were served liquor in the party. The Commissioner of Police has issued a strict warning to pubs and bars in the city after the hit-and-run case.
It is said that the police and the State Excise Department are neglecting the serious issue. MLA Ravindra Dhangekar and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare criticised the government over the issue.
The Pune Police have taken a major action in the FC Road drugs party case. Two officers from the Shivajinagar Police Station have been suspended. Earlier, two marshals were suspended. Seven people have been arrested.
In a social media post, Mohol said: ‘The Police Inspector attached with the Shivajinagar Police Station has been suspended after ‘that’ viral video clip… A major action has been taken after my instructions. The Police Inspector (Crime) and the Assistant Police Inspector of the police station, under which the incident happened, have been suspended.”
His post stated: ‘Though the suspension is an immediate action, I have instructed the Commissioner of Police to conduct an independent campaign against narcotics in the city and appoint separate manpower and machinery for the purpose’.
The post further said: ‘The campaign should be carried out at all colleges, pubs, hotels and suspicious spots. Stern action should be taken. An effective drive should be launched to find out how narcotics are smuggled into the city. I have issued such instructions.”
