Pune: Sale of tobacco or its products are banned in the periphery of schools, colleges and educational institutes under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003.

The Act has been implemented to curb addiction among students. However, parents have been complaining that such substances are openly sold near schools. Cigarettes, tobacco and gutkha are easily available at stalls and paan shops near schools. It is seen that school children visit these stalls while going to school and also when their school is over. This is leading to addiction and is having adverse effects on their mind and studies.

In this background, a delegation of the City Unit of the BJP, along with parents, met DCP (zone 1) Sandeep Singh Gill. They demanded that the police should survey areas around schools and take action against stalls and paan shops if they are selling tobacco products to school children.

DCP Gill has assured the delegation that the police would look into the issue and give necessary instruction.

The delegation comprised BJP City Unit President Dheeraj Ghate, Pune City BJP Young Women’s Wing President Manisha Dharne, Manisha Sanap, Anand Patil, Prashant Surve, Vijay Gaikwad, Amar Awale, Pushkar Tuljapurkar and a large number of office-bearers.
