Devendra Fadnavis sticks to his decision to step down as Deputy Chief Minister, all eyes on Delhi

Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai: Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis has expressed his desire to step down and join fulltime party work. In Delhi, the ruling and opposition camps are busy strategising in the wake of the changed political scenario after the Lok Sabha elections.

Many senior state BJP politicians faced defeat in the general election. The BJP’s score is below par. This is seen as a big setback for the party. Immediately after the results, Fadnavis announced, in a press conference, that he would step down as the DyCM and work wholeheartedly to revive the party’s fortune owning the responsibility for its poor show in the State.

Many BJP leaders visited Fadnavis at his Sagar bungalow in Mumbai and tried to persuade him away from the decision. However, Fadnavis is not ready to listen to them.

He has clarified his position. He said, “I must work outside the government if the BJP has to be strengthened during the Assembly elections. It will be possible to reply to any criticism of the government and the party if I work fulltime for the party. I will get time to strengthen the party. The party is more important than the ministerial post.”

It remains to be seen what stance Fadnavis takes before the party leaders in Delhi and what they decide on the issue.
