Wingtip Damage: IndiGo and Air India Express Aircraft Collide at Kolkata Airport

Close Call Raises Safety Concerns, Prompting DGCA Investigation

A concerning incident unfolded at Kolkata Airport as a Darbhanga-bound IndiGo aircraft collided with a stationary Air India Express flight while taxiing, resulting in damage to the wingtips of both planes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the passengers, but the collision has sparked investigations into safety protocols at the airport.

The collision occurred as the IndiGo aircraft, carrying 135 passengers, including four infants, was taxiing and struck the stationary Air India Express flight awaiting runway clearance. The impact caused a part of the Air India Express aircraft’s wing to fall onto the runway, with noticeable dents observed on the wing of the IndiGo aircraft.

In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) initiated a detailed investigation, off-rostering both pilots of the IndiGo A320 VT-ISS and questioning ground staff involved. Both aircraft have been grounded for thorough inspection to ensure passenger safety.

IndiGo promptly acknowledged the incident, filing a report with the DGCA and assuring passengers of their safety. Similarly, Air India Express expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and pledged cooperation with authorities for further investigation.

The incident underscores the importance of a comprehensive assessment and corrective measures to enhance safety protocols and prevent similar incidents in the future.
