Weather Update: Monsoon Advances, Heatwave Alerts Issued Across India

Southwest Monsoon Advances

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the advancement of the Southwest Monsoon into additional regions of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Northwest Bay of Bengal, Gangetic West Bengal, remaining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and some parts of Bihar over the next 4-5 days.

Heatwave Alerts Issued

The IMD has issued a red alert for heatwave conditions in parts of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, June 16. An orange alert has been issued for Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, predicting heatwave to severe heatwave conditions.

Regional Weather Forecasts

Severe Heatwave Alerts:

  • Uttar Pradesh: Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected from June 15 to June 18. Districts including Bulandshahr, Varanasi, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Lalitpur, Sonbhadra, Kanpur Dehat, Mathura, and Agra are under a red alert.
  • Delhi, Punjab, Haryana: Severe heatwave conditions are anticipated between June 15 and 17. Delhi is on orange alert from June 16 to June 18, with predictions of a clear sky, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions, and strong surface winds (30-40 kmph) on June 16 and June 17. June 18 will see a partly cloudy sky with heatwave conditions.
  • Bihar and Jharkhand: Isolated pockets may experience heatwave conditions on June 16.
  • Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Division, North Rajasthan: Heatwave conditions are expected from June 15 to June 18.
  • Relief: Parts of North India may see relief from heatwaves after June 18.

Monsoon and Rainfall Alerts

Heavy Rainfall Predictions:

  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya: Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls are likely over the next three to four days.
  • Northeast India: Widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, as well as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, over the next seven days.
  • Meghalaya and Assam: Extremely heavy rainfall is likely in Meghalaya from June 15 to June 19, and in Assam from June 17 to June 19.
  • Kerala and Telangana: Rainfall is expected on Sunday, June 16.
  • Odisha: Isolated heavy rainfall is expected on June 18 and June 19. Scattered light to moderate rainfall is predicted for Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha over the next four days.
