Voice Silenced: Ameen Sayani, Iconic Radio Presenter and ‘Geetmala’ Maestro, Passes Away at 91

In a sorrowful turn of events, Ameen Sayani, the legendary Indian announcer and the voice behind the iconic ‘Geetmala,’ bid farewell to the world at the age of 91 on Tuesday evening. The renowned presenter suffered a heart attack at his residence in South Mumbai, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the golden era of Indian radio.

Ameen Sayani’s son, Rajil Sayani, confirmed the heartbreaking news to ABP News, revealing that his father suffered the fatal heart attack around 6:00 PM on Tuesday. Despite immediate efforts to rush him to H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, where doctors attempted to treat him, Ameen Sayani succumbed to the cardiac episode.

The iconic radio presenter had been battling high blood pressure and various age-related ailments, compounded by a 12-year struggle with back pain that necessitated the use of a walker for mobility.

Ameen Sayani’s Enduring Legacy: Ameen Sayani’s illustrious career spanned several decades, with his program “Binaca Geetmala” becoming a cultural phenomenon. Airing on Radio Ceylon and later on All India Radio’s Vividh Bharati for nearly 42 years, the show broke all records of success. Sayani’s weekly broadcasts were eagerly awaited, and his captivating voice and engaging style made him a household name across India.

The legendary announcer holds the record for producing, comparing, and providing voice-overs for more than 54,000 radio programs. His distinctive voice was also behind approximately 19,000 jingles, earning him a place in the prestigious Limca Book of Records.

Beyond radio, Ameen Sayani made notable contributions as an announcer in films such as “Bhoot Bangla,” “Teen Deviyan,” and “Katl.” He hosted popular shows like “S Kumars Ka Filmi Mukadama,” focusing on film stars and adding another dimension to his versatile career.

Ameen Sayani’s last rites are expected to take place in South Mumbai, marking the end of an era in Indian entertainment.
