Vintage Steam Engine Roars Back to Life as a Selfie Hotspot at Prayagraj Junction!

Prayagraj: A retired 70-year-old vintage steam engine, once an unsung hero ferrying passengers across the Indian railway landscape, has found a new purpose outside the reservation counter at Prayagraj Junction. Despite its official retirement, this resilient locomotive has become a delightful selfie point for enthusiastic youths and tourists.

This vintage engine, manufactured by WB WAGNOl Limited in 1953 at Gujarat, was originally stationed at Prayagraj Junction after being taken out of service on February 25, 1993. In 2018, it underwent a renovation and was strategically placed outside the reservation counter, where it quickly gained attention as a center of attraction.

Fitted with a motor, the steam engine not only rolls its wheels on the same spot but also emits the nostalgic sound of whistles and smoke, providing an immersive experience for visitors. After a brief hiatus following the Kumbh Mela in 2019, the engine is back in action, serving as a popular spot for selfies.

Himanshu Badoni, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), took the initiative to revive the vintage engine, ensuring it remains a vibrant and engaging display. Under his guidance, a signal has been installed before the engine to enhance its visual appeal and provide a more authentic experience.

Railway officials shared that the engine’s history dates back to its purchase for ₹1.61 lakh, running on narrow gauge tracks and standing at an impressive height of 42 feet. Over the years, it has become not just a symbol of the Indian railway heritage but also a dynamic attraction that sparks curiosity and nostalgia.

As the vintage steam engine continues to roll its wheels, emit whistles, and puff smoke, it stands as a living testament to the rich history of Indian railways, delighting both the young and old who seek a memorable selfie moment.
