The Greens Society’s Water Revolution: Bengaluru Residents Slash Bills in Half with Innovative Solutions

Amidst Bengaluru’s escalating water crisis, residents of The Greens society have emerged as pioneers in water conservation, implementing innovative strategies that led to a remarkable 50% reduction in their water consumption and a substantial cut in their Rs 16 lakh water bill. Here’s how they achieved this feat:

1. Accountability with Flow Meters:

  • The installation of flow meters in every house created a system that not only penalized heavy water users but also incentivized conservation. Residents paid for each liter consumed, turning it into a positive measure to track and improve water-saving habits. The installation cost approximately Rs 24 lakh.

2. Rainwater Harvesting:

  • The society strategically connected all terraces to filters and utilized PVC pipes directed to underground sumps and borewell recharge points for extensive rainwater harvesting. This initiative allowed them to recharge water sumps during rainfall, significantly reducing their reliance on purchased water.

3. Sewage Treatment Plant for Water Reuse:

  • Opting for an eco-friendly approach, residents repurposed excess water from their Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for flushing purposes back in 2016. This decision resulted in substantial water savings, reducing their monthly tanker usage from four to an average of 1-2 tankers. Approximately 2-3 tankers worth of water are saved daily.

The implementation of these strategic moves not only addressed the critical water shortage but also presented a model for sustainable water management that can be replicated elsewhere.

The success of The Greens society’s initiatives serves as a testament to the positive impact of community-driven conservation efforts, benefitting each of its 600 residents.
