Tata Motors Commences Production at Upgraded Sanand Plant Acquired from Ford

Sanand, Gujarat: Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), the electric vehicle subsidiary of Tata Motors, has announced the commencement of production at its recently acquired Sanand plant in Gujarat. Originally obtained from Ford India in January 2023, the facility underwent significant upgrades to accommodate both internal combustion and electric vehicle manufacturing. The Tata Nexon is the first model to roll off the assembly line, symbolizing the plant’s transition into a modern, technologically advanced production hub.

Retooling and Upgrades: Spread across 460 acres, the Sanand plant witnessed a rapid transformation within 12 months of Tata’s acquisition. Comprising four main shops—Stamping, Body Construction, Paint, and Final Assembly—the facility boasts high levels of automation and technology to ensure precision manufacturing. Major upgrades include new dies for stamping critical panels, additional robots in the weld shop, and modifications in the paint and assembly shops.

Capacity and Scalability: With a production capacity of 300,000 units per annum, the Sanand plant is scalable up to 420,000 units per year. This expansion aligns with Tata Motors’ growth strategy, responding to increasing demand and preparing for a surge in electric vehicle adoption.

Sustainable Practices: In line with Tata’s commitment to sustainability, the upgraded Sanand plant features a 50 kW solar rooftop and aims to become water-positive by December. The facility is a testament to Tata’s dedication to environmentally conscious manufacturing practices.

Future Plans and Job Creation: Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited & TPEM, expressed pride in witnessing the first car roll out of the retooled Sanand facility. The company plans to invest in upskilling its workforce, creating an additional 1,000 jobs in the region within the next three to four months.

As Tata Motors gears up to introduce new electric models, the Sanand plant stands as a cornerstone for the company’s electric vehicle offensive, contributing to India’s evolving automotive landscape.
