In a distressing incident echoing the dark underbelly of caste discrimination, a 25-year-old man named Praveen was brutally hacked to death in Chennai. The alleged motive behind the gruesome act was Praveen’s marriage to Sharmi, a woman from a higher caste, igniting the flames of “honour killing.”
Praveen and Sharmi tied the knot in November, choosing love over societal norms. However, the decision to marry outside their respective castes proved fatal for Praveen. The assailants, led by Sharmi’s elder brother Dinesh, who already faces murder charges, orchestrated the deadly attack with the involvement of four accomplices.
The incident unfolded on Sunday, sending shockwaves through the community and reigniting concerns about the prevalence of “honour killings” in certain parts of India. Praveen, grievously injured in the attack, was rushed to Chrompet General Hospital in Chennai but was declared brought dead.
Local law enforcement swiftly acted, apprehending all five assailants responsible for the brutal act. The case highlights the urgent need for societal introspection and legal reforms to curb the menace of “honour killings” and foster an environment where personal choices are respected over archaic prejudices.
