Delhi-based architectural firm Morphogenesis is on the brink of making history with the inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), positioned to be the “world’s biggest workspace.” This colossal complex, surpassing the capacity of the US Pentagon, is set to transform the global landscape of rough and polished diamond trading.
Redefining Diamond Trading:
The SDB, constructed at a monumental cost of Rs 3400 crore, spans 35.54 acres and hosts an astounding 4,200 diamond trading offices. Its grandeur marks a significant shift as the entire diamond trading business relocates from Mumbai to Surat, underscoring the city’s commitment to becoming a global hub for the gems and jewelry community.
Transformation of Khajod:
Once a landfill site emitting foul odors, Khajod, on Surat’s outskirts, has undergone a remarkable transformation into a thriving garden. This symbolic change mirrors Surat’s dedication to welcoming the international gems and jewelry community.
Infrastructure Development:
With the relocation of the waste treatment plant and upcoming infrastructure developments like the Metro rail system and city bus connectivity extension to Khajod, Surat is strategically preparing for the grand inauguration ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event will also mark the unveiling of the international airport on Sunday.
Demands and Expectations:
Despite the anticipation surrounding the SDB launch, diamond businessmen have articulated a series of demands. These include a call for more international flights departing from Surat airport, which currently offers only a single flight route to Sharjah. Additionally, there is a push for the relaxation of prohibition laws in the city.
Industry Impact:
With 135 offices opening post-Diwali, including 26 operated by Mumbai-based businessmen expanding their operations to Surat, discussions are ongoing to address the concerns of the gems and jewelry industry. The industry eagerly awaits the inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse, anticipating the significant impact it will have on global diamond trading.
