Sudha Murty Nominated to Rajya Sabha on International Women’s Day

In a momentous announcement on International Women’s Day, President Draupadi Murmu has nominated Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha, as conveyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The nomination is a recognition of Murty’s extraordinary contributions to social work, philanthropy, and education.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his delight over the nomination, emphasizing Sudha Murty’s impactful presence in the Rajya Sabha as a powerful manifestation of ‘Nari Shakti’ or Women Power. He lauded her immense and inspiring contributions across diverse fields.

“Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy, and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti,’ exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” Prime Minister Modi shared on social media.

The President of India is authorized to nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha, acknowledging their outstanding contributions to arts, literature, sciences, and social services. Sudha Murty’s nomination aligns with this tradition and marks a significant recognition of her impactful work.

About Sudha Murty: At 73, Sudha Murty is celebrated as a philanthropist, author, and the former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. Her husband, Narayana Murthy, is the founder of the renowned IT giant Infosys, and her son-in-law is UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Honored with the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023, Sudha Murty’s accolades extend to her pioneering work in computer science, her involvement in public health care initiatives with the Gates Foundation, and her contributions to various social causes.

Her legacy includes the establishment of orphanages, participation in rural development efforts, advocacy for computer and library facilities in Karnataka government schools, and the founding of the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.
