Southern Soaked: Another Wave of Rains and Thunderstorms Hits Tamil Nadu and Kerala

IMD Alert

As November unfolds, the southern regions of India find themselves in the crosshairs of a renewed bout of wet weather. The aftermath of Cyclone Midhili’s impact has left Tamil Nadu and Kerala grappling with excess rainfall, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts more precipitation on the horizon.

Latest Weather Outlook:

Persistently wet conditions have marked November, with Tamil Nadu witnessing a 22% excess in rainfall (147.6 mm), and Kerala experiencing a substantial 45% excess (168.4 mm). The dissipation of Cyclone Midhili, which wreaked havoc in the Bay of Bengal, has ushered in a period of relative calm in the eastern and northeastern regions. However, the southern states are gearing up for the next weather challenge.

IMD Forecast:

According to the latest updates from the IMD, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are on the radar for widespread light to moderate showers, with isolated heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. This weather pattern is anticipated to persist from Saturday to Monday, spanning November 18 to 20.

Thunderstorm Alert:

Adding to the forecast, the IMD predicts isolated thunderstorm activity in South Peninsular India for the next five days, extending until Wednesday, November 22. District-level alerts have been issued in Tamil Nadu and Kerala for specific days to prepare for potential heavy rains.

District-Level Alerts:

  • Saturday:
    • Tamil Nadu: Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari

    • Kerala: Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta

Meteorological Factors:

This upcoming wet spell is attributed to the interaction of multiple meteorological systems, including a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka, and a trough connecting these systems to the cyclonic circulation associated with the remnant of Cyclone Midhili over North Tripura.

Friday saw isolated heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, setting the stage for the impending weather conditions. As southern India braces for another round of showers and thunderstorms, residents are advised to stay vigilant, especially in areas under the yellow watch, emphasizing awareness of the local weather situation.
