Social Divide: Hyderabad Society Criticized for Penalizing Workers Using Main Elevator

A residential community in Hyderabad has ignited a social media storm after issuing a notice imposing a fine of Rs 1000 on domestic helpers, delivery staff, and other laborers for utilizing the main elevator in the complex. The notice, shared on social media by user Shaheena Attarwala, has triggered a heated debate on the issue of social discrimination.

Attarwala, in her critique, highlighted the societal tendency reflected in such actions, emphasizing the stark contrast in the treatment of workers in India compared to Western countries. She called out the elitist attitude prevailing in certain sections of Indian society and urged an end to discrimination based on occupation.

The video caption pointed to the societal conditioning to hide such discriminatory practices and the belief that individuals engaged in laborious tasks cannot share the same spaces. The hefty fine of Rs 1000, equivalent to approximately 25% of their earnings, was criticized as a punitive measure.

The announcement has sparked widespread discussion on various social media platforms, with many condemning the society’s decision as biased and reinforcing social stratification. Critics argue that it unjustly targets individuals performing essential tasks and perpetuates a divisive mindset.

However, some individuals have expressed support for the society’s decision, citing the need for separate lifts for workers due to overcrowding in main elevators. They argue that such segregation is a common practice in various commercial complexes to ensure efficiency and convenience for residents.
