Skill Enhancement and Empowerment: PM Modi Unveils PM Vishwakarma Scheme

On his 73rd birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the ‘PM Vishwakarma’ scheme, a transformative initiative aimed at upskilling artisans and enhancing their livelihoods. This significant step, scheduled for September 17, is expected to empower artisans by providing them with easier access to credit and marketing support.

In his message shared on September 16, PM Modi expressed his commitment to the welfare of skilled individuals who play a vital role in society. He highlighted the launch of the ‘PM Vishwakarma’ scheme, emphasizing its potential to not only enhance the skills of artisans across the nation but also to promote their creations globally.

The launch event will coincide with the inauguration of the first phase of the India International Convention Centre (IICC) in Dwarka, marking another milestone in India’s progress.

Funded entirely by the Central government, the ‘PM Vishwakarma’ scheme boasts a substantial budget of Rs 13,000 crore. Under this initiative, individuals will receive skill upgradation through both basic and advanced training programs. Additionally, artisans will be incentivized with a toolkit grant of Rs 15,000.

Access to collateral-free credit support will be a key feature of the scheme, with artisans eligible for up to Rs 1 lakh in the first tranche and up to Rs 2 lakh in the second tranche. These loans will carry a concessional interest rate of just 5 percent, easing the financial burden on artisans. Furthermore, the scheme will offer incentives for digital transactions and marketing activities.

PM Modi introduced the ‘PM Vishwakarma’ scheme during his Independence Day address, and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) allocated the substantial Rs 13,000 crore for its implementation. The initiative is designed to benefit traditional craftspeople and artisans and will remain applicable for five financial years, from 2023-24 to 2027-28.

The Prime Minister’s Office expressed the sustained commitment of PM Modi to support individuals engaged in traditional crafts. Beyond financial support, the focus is on preserving age-old traditions, culture, and diverse heritage through local products, art, and crafts.

On September 17, PM Modi will not only inaugurate the first phase of the IICC, named Yashobhoomi, in Dwarka, New Delhi, but also dedicate the extension of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Line, connecting Dwarka Sector 21 to the newly constructed metro station at Dwarka Sector 25. This series of events reflects the government’s dedication to infrastructure development and skill enhancement, contributing to the growth and prosperity of artisans across the nation.
