Railways’ Compassion: 40% Wage Hike for Porters in Delhi Stations

Pune Crime News

In a move that reflects empathy and addresses long-standing concerns, the Indian Railways has announced a substantial 40% increase in wages for porters working at all railway stations in Delhi. This significant wage revision comes after nearly seven years, signifying a positive step towards improving the livelihoods of these hardworking individuals.

A Generous Increase

Previously, porters were compensated Rs 100 for transporting 40 kg of goods. Now, with the new wage structure in place, they will receive Rs 140 for the same task. The decision to raise wages was issued by Divisional Commercial Manager Ravindrapreet Kaur, who has directed all Delhi Division stations to implement this change promptly. Furthermore, railway authorities have been instructed to install updated price list boards at all stations to ensure transparency and awareness.

Extending the Benefits

The augmented wages will not be limited to Delhi stations alone. Porters at stations in areas like Panipat, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Panipat will also enjoy the benefits of this wage hike. This development follows a recent meeting between Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and porters at Anand Vihar station, where concerns regarding stagnant wages and delayed uniform provisions were raised. In response to these concerns, railway officials acted swiftly to address the situation. There is also speculation that the porters may soon receive new uniforms, although no official announcement has been made regarding other wage increases.

Implementation Challenges

While railway authorities had initially scheduled the implementation of the new wage structure from September 27, many porters remain unaware of these changes. Kripa, a porter at New Delhi Railway Station, mentioned that he is currently operating at the previous wage rate and has not received any information about the wage increase. Furthermore, the updated wage lists have not yet been posted at the stations.

Revised Passenger Charges

The revised wage structure not only benefits porters but also impacts passenger charges for specific services:

  • Group A Station (40 kg weight): Rs 100 -> Rs 140
  • Group B Station (40 kg weight): Rs 70 -> Rs 100
  • Handcart (2 quintals): Rs 170 -> Rs 230
  • Handcart (more than 2 quintals): Rs 250 -> Rs 340
  • Group A Station (carrying the sick in a wheelchair): Rs 130 -> Rs 180
  • Group B Station (carrying the sick in a wheelchair): Rs 100 -> Rs 140
  • Group A Station (carrying the sick on a stretcher): Rs 200 -> Rs 270
  • Group B Station (carrying the sick on a stretcher): Rs 120 -> Rs 160
