Pune, a vibrant city in Maharashtra, has secured the seventh position in the list of the world’s most congested cities, according to the TomTom Traffic Index for the year 2023. The report sheds light on the average travel times in Pune and other major cities globally, providing a comprehensive overview of the urban traffic landscape.
In 2022, the average travel time to cover a distance of 10 kilometers in Pune was 27 minutes and 50 seconds. However, this slightly increased in 2023, underlining the persistent challenges of congestion in the city. Comparatively, the capital city of India, New Delhi, ranked 44th, with an average travel time of 21 minutes and 40 seconds for the same distance. Mumbai secured the 54th position, with a travel time of 21 minutes and 20 seconds.
Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, showcased a positive trend, moving from the second to the sixth spot in the TomTom Traffic Index. This improvement indicates reduced congestion, with a decreased travel time of 28 minutes for 10 kilometers, down from 30 minutes in 2022. Meanwhile, London retained its status as the most congested city globally, with a staggering 37 minutes and 20 seconds required to cover the same distance.
TomTom Traffic analyzed data from 387 cities in 55 countries, considering diverse vehicle types such as petrol, diesel, and electric, to provide a comprehensive assessment of global traffic efficiency.
